We Take a Look at Flag Etiquette
As part of our summer outdoor decor, many of us proudly fly the American flag on our front porches or in other prominent places. But did you know there are rules about how to properly handle, display and even dispose of the flag?
Here are just some of the rules established in the U.S. Flag Code:
- The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.
- The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, floor, water or merchandise.
- The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.
- The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding or drapery. (Unless an article of clothing is made from an actual flag, there is NO breach of flag etiquette, according to the American Legion. Wearing clothing with the image of the flag on it is considered an expression of patriotism.)
- When a flag is so tattered that it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of the United States, it should be replaced in a dignified manner, preferably by burning. (This applies to flags that are extremely damaged, not flags burned as an act of protest.)
These rules are only advisory, which means you can’t be charged or punished for breaking them. Still, let’s all keep in mind that they were created out of respect for our country and one of its most treasured symbols.
The start of the summer season also got us thinking about important guidelines for your air conditioning equipment. While you can’t be charged for breaking these rules, either, you could end up being “punished” in other ways, which will become obvious as you read on.
Let’s check out some of those rules:
- Make sure your system is ready for the hot summer season by scheduling air conditioning maintenance with us. A well-maintained system will operate at its best using the least amount of energy. As a result, you’ll avoid performance issues and save money on your monthly energy bills.
- Don’t put off minor cooling repairs, hoping they’ll resolve on their own. A small rattle, squeak or drip can usually be fixed easily at a modest cost. When it’s ignored, though, it can develop into something much more serious (and more expensive).
- Keep your thermostat at a comfortable yet affordable setting. Energy.gov recommends 78 degrees when you’re home and, when you’re not home, raising the thermostat or shutting it off. Programmable thermostats are a great way to keep track of your home’s temperature while you’re away.
The team at Matheson hopes you and those you love have a wonderful summer season. As we travel the area, we love seeing the Stars and Stripes proudly on display. We love this great country and the people in our community!
