And How to Bring It Home
Happy summer, Southeast Michigan! The weather has been beautiful, so we hope you’ve been able to sneak in some getaways this season. Speaking of getaways, have you ever noticed that after a long travel day, few things feel better than opening the door to a cool, comfortable hotel room? The temperature is pleasant. The air feels light. You drop your bags, kick off your shoes and immediately feel like you can breathe again.
That feeling is part of what good indoor air quality is all about. IAQ may not be the first thing you search for when booking a stay, but you would notice its absence within just a few seconds of walking in. A room that’s humid, dusty or stale can put a damper on even the most promising trip. When the air is fresh, however, it improves the entire experience.
One of the Best Hotel Amenities Is Invisible
No hotel can control every guest who rolls a suitcase through its doors. Perfume, takeout containers, wet swimsuits and mystery odors all come along for the ride. The building also has to contend with outdoor humidity, pollen and whatever the weather happens to be doing that day.
Yet each new guest expects to enter a room that seems like it’s been waiting patiently for them all along. Achieving that relies on heating, cooling, ventilation and countless other systems working together behind the scenes to create a space that simply feels right.
Your home depends on many of those same systems, although hopefully with less piped-in music playing from the foyer. Cooking, cleaning, pets, showers and open doors or windows all affect the air indoors. Because these changes happen gradually, you may not notice them until the house starts feeling a little less balanced than it used to.
Check In to a More Comfortable Home
You don’t need a concierge desk or a tiny shampoo collection to make your home feel more like a relaxing retreat. Fortunately, a few simple habits can go a long way toward helping your HVAC system create that same welcoming feeling:
- Give your air filter a regular checkout date. Your filter collects dust, pollen, pet dander and other particles as air moves through the HVAC system. Once it becomes clogged, airflow may suffer and your equipment has to push against all that accumulated debris. Check it regularly and replace it when necessary.
- Keep the air moving. A room can feel stale quickly when conditioned air is not circulating. Make sure supply and return vents in your home remain open and unobstructed rather than hiding behind furniture, curtains or a suspiciously large pile of vacation laundry.
- Don’t let humidity extend its stay. Moisture can make an otherwise cool home feel sticky and uncomfortable. Your air conditioner removes some humidity as it operates, but a system that is not running properly may struggle to keep up. Persistent moisture problems may also call for additional humidity-control solutions.
- Treat HVAC maintenance like a standing reservation. Hotels cannot afford to wait for systems to break before giving them attention, and neither should homeowners. Routine maintenance gives a technician the opportunity to clean components, inspect operation and catch developing issues before your comfort gets bumped from the itinerary.
- Consider whether your current filtration fits your household. A basic filter primarily protects HVAC equipment, while other filters may capture smaller airborne particles. Homes with pets, frequent allergy concerns or heavy dust may benefit from a conversation about upgraded filtration or whole-home air-cleaning products.
