Don’t Let Your Drains Put a Strain on the Holidays
Holidays mean a house full of dinner guests and overnight guests. It’s one of the worst times for a toilet to overflow, a sink to clog or the shower to run cold. Brr!
When your plumbing acts up, you can count on Matheson’s 24-hour emergency response. We’re experts in repairing fixtures, faucets, sinks, toilets, drains, sump pumps, water softeners and water heaters. But we’re also the team that can keep you on the right path to avoid those plumbing disasters.
We have six tips for you:
- Plan ahead.
One of the smartest ways to avoid a plumbing disaster over the holidays is to schedule plumbing maintenance and repairs now. We’ll hook you up with our superior service. We also can suggest ideas to make sure you have ample hot water for your overnight guests. Ask us today! - Treat cooking grease with respect.
Although hot grease may look like it can travel through your pipes with ease, it firms up as it cools and can cause nasty clogs. Never pour grease down the drain. Instead, pour it into an empty jar and throw it in the trash can. - Your garbage disposal isn’t a trash dump.
It’s simply not designed to handle all of your food waste. These items can mess with your plumbing, so keep them out of the disposal: bones, eggshells, potato peels, coffee grounds, pasta, noodles, celery (and other high-fiber foods) and fruit pits. - Save the dirty dishes for later.
Did you know your garbage disposal and dishwasher share the same drain? If you use your garbage disposal while your dishwasher is running, you run the risk of food waste entering your wash cycle. Yuck! Make sure the disposal is off when you are operating your dishwasher. - Resist the urge to flush these items.
Toilet paper is designed to dissolve in water, which helps prevent clogs. These items are not, so don’t flush them: wet wipes, cotton balls, Q-tips, napkins, tissues, paper towels, facial cleansing wipes and feminine hygiene products. - Time your showers.
When you have a house full of overnight guests, it’s not the time for long, relaxing showers. Your hot water could run out. Also, make sure to avoid showering when other water-dependent tasks are happening, such as laundering or dishwashing.
