Home Maintenance Basics Every Young Adult Should Know

Lessons They Don’t Teach in School

Graduation season is here! Caps are flying, diplomas are being framed and young people everywhere are preparing for their next chapter. Whether they’re moving into a dorm, apartment or first home, they’re about to discover an important truth: Some of the most useful things you’ll ever know aren’t found in a textbook.

Sure, kids learned algebra, biology, history and art. But what about finding the main water shutoff? Or knowing what should never go down a garbage disposal? As seasoned homeowners know, a little knowledge can go a long way when it comes to avoiding surprises. Before your graduate leaves the nest, make sure they’re ready for a few of those “this is the first time I’ve lived on my own” moments.

While some situations can be solved with a quick conversation or smart preparation, others call for professional help. From drain repair in Commerce Township to heating and cooling tune-ups to complete system replacements, the team at Matheson is always ready to step in when your home decides to throw a pop quiz your way.

Life Skills 101: A Crash Course

Independence is exciting … right up until there’s water everywhere or the lights go out. Knowing a few basics ahead of time can help young people feel more confident when the unexpected happens.

  • Put together an emergency kit. A few essentials like batteries, bottled water, nonperishable snacks, first-aid supplies and other similar items can make real-world situations a lot less stressful. Also, always have a fully charged portable phone charger ready to go.
  • Pay attention to small leaks. A dripping faucet may not seem urgent, but minor issues can quickly become major repairs when ignored. And if utilities aren’t covered, those “minor” leaks can make water bills skyrocket.
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors regularly. Batteries don’t last forever, and these devices play an important role in keeping a home safe. A great rule of thumb is to change batteries twice a year when the clocks change. This approach beats the heck out of searching for a ladder at 3 a.m. to stop the chirping.
  • Know how to reset a tripped breaker. Not every power issue requires an emergency call or repair. Sometimes, the solution is as simple as locating the electrical panel and knowing what to do next.
  • Learn what doesn’t belong down the drain. Grease, coffee grounds, non-food items and many table scraps can create plumbing problems that nobody wants to deal with.
  • Keep a flashlight somewhere easy to find. When the power goes out, a phone battery may not be the best backup plan.
  • Know where the main water shutoff is located. A burst pipe or major leak becomes a much bigger problem when nobody knows how to stop the water.
  • Learn how to use a fire extinguisher. It’s one of those things everyone hopes they’ll never need, which is exactly why it’s worth learning ahead of time.
  • Learn how to change an HVAC filter. This is one of the simplest maintenance tasks in a home, yet it’s often overlooked. A dirty filter can affect comfort, efficiency and indoor air quality.
  • Know your emergency exits. Whether in an apartment, dorm or house, it’s smart to have an evacuation plan before an emergency happens.
  • Buy a plunger before you need a plunger. Trust us on this one.

Things People Learn the Hard Way

Here are a few realities that tend to surprise first-time renters, dorm-dwellers and homeowners:

  • Knowing who to call is half the battle. No one wants to be searching for names and numbers in the middle of an emergency. Having that information stored in an easy-to-find place, both electronically and somewhere more low-tech, is a simple step that can save valuable time.
  • Toilets are not trash cans. Even products labeled “flushable” can cause problems in plumbing systems.
  • Air filters do not fall under “set it and forget it.” If you can’t remember the last time one was changed, it’s probably time.
  • Strange noises aren’t going anywhere. Whether it’s a rattling HVAC system or a toilet that suddenly starts making unexpected sounds, unusual noises are often early warning signs.
  • A little maintenance is usually cheaper than a big repair. Routine service often costs far less than waiting for a complete breakdown.
  • Google can answer many questions. It can’t fix the problem. Sometimes professional expertise is still the fastest path to a solution. Also, never take AI advice at face value; you’ll want to double-check and verify important information before acting on it.

Be Proactive. Be Curious. Be Resourceful.

Congrats to the class of 2026! May your Wi-Fi stay connected, your breakers never trip and your water heater keep up with demand.

Homeownership, renting and dorm life all come with a learning curve, and nobody is expected to know everything right out of the gate. Whether it’s understanding how a home’s plumbing system works or learning basic maintenance habits, everyone starts somewhere. You’ve got this!

And a word to all you parents out there: If some of your home comfort systems have been around since your graduate was in kindergarten, it might be time to look into furnace or water heater replacement.
