We’re the Team to Trust for Your Heating System Repair!
It’s the holiday season—time for mistletoe, ho-ho-ho and … that strand (or two or three) of Christmas tree lights that simply refuse to work! Ahhhhhh! Who needs this kind of stress? None of us—that’s who. So, your favorite elves at Matheson Heating, Air & Plumbing are providing tips to fix those lights rather than spending time (and money) running to the store to replace them.
At Matheson, we’re firm believers in Santa—and reliable, affordable fixes whenever possible instead of more costly replacements. That’s why we’re up on the rooftop sharing with all of you good little boys and girls that we’re the reliable team for your heating repairs—even the most challenging ones. More on that later. First, check out these DIY holiday light repair ideas:
- Blown fuses. A blown fuse is one of the most common causes of uncooperative lights strands. Slide open the “door” on the strand’s plug, remove the two fuses and hold them up to the light. If you don’t see an unbroken wire between the two metal contacts, the fuse is broken and needs to be replaced.
- Defective bulb. If one particular section of a light string is out, it’s probably a defective bulb or a bad electrical connection. Gently pull out each bulb from its socket and make sure the two copper leads on each side of the bulb are intact. Continue with each unlit bulb in the chain until you find the problem one(s). Replacing them should solve the problem.
- Corroded socket. The contacts inside the socket can become corroded or dirty over time, creating a poor connection between the bulb and socket. Cleaning the wire contacts with a small file or brush should bring the bulb back to life. Make sure the lights are unplugged before performing this task!
- Improper care. Another major reason holiday light bulbs fail is because we don’t handle them properly. When you’re decorating your tree or other parts of your home, try not to tug, pull or yank on the strands. Bulbs, wires and sockets can become damaged easily. Arrange them with care! Then, when the holidays are over, make sure to carefully take down light strands and pack them away securely, preventing any bulbs from banging together. Never, ever wad up the strands in balls and stuff them in boxes. That’s a sure-fire way to face holiday light frustration right out of the box next year!
Did you know most light bulbs are only made to last for 1,000 to 1,500 hours? Depending on how often you have yours on, they may last only one season but, typically, no more than three seasons. LED lights are the smarter choice because they can last up to 10 years.
At Matheson, we love helping our customers keep their heating systems up and running efficiently and affordably for as long as possible. We have nearly 75 years in the HVAC business so we’ve seen it all and fixed it all. We will never try to talk you into replacing your heating system when our expert repairs make the most sense.
